3D Optical Digitizers
Patterned light is projected onto subjects; deformation is recorded by an off-set camera. Triangulation calculates a 3D mesh. Fast, accurate and adaptable for human portraiture.

3D Laser Scanners
A laser line moves over subjects' surfaces; an off-set camera records deformation. Triangulation calculates a 3D mesh. Slower, but higher accuracy enabled for static objects.

3D Mechanical Digitizers
Mechanical arms physically probe objects, guided by the user; points are recorded on the surface of subjects. Intuitive but slow. Unsuitable for delicate objects.

3D Scanning software
View, edit and export scan data efficiently and accurately. Triangulation, registration and merging algorithms, polygon editing, CAD conversion, model export for web viewing.

Polhemus FastScan Cobra/Scorpion - Handheld 3D Laser Scanners

The new FastSCAN Cobra™ is 30% less expensive and 50% smaller than ever, while retaining all functional capability, allowing continued ease of use and greater portability. FastSCAN Cobra instantly acquires three dimensional surfaces by gathering measurements made by smoothly sweeping a handheld laser scanning wand over an object - in a manner similar to spray painting. The object's image instantly appears on your computer screen and the finished scan is processed to combine any overlapping sweeps, significantly reducing the time to develop surface models of virtually any object with little or no metal content. The three-dimensional data can then be saved in industry-standard formats for loading into other programs.

Polhemus FastScan Cobra

As the industry's most portable and lightweight handheld scanner, FastSCAN Cobra allows you to go where no scanner has gone before - on archaeological digs, directly to the plant floor, and in to sensitive areas such as medical examination rooms. Significantly speeding up the modelling process, FastSCAN Cobra instantly stitches together an exact replica of the object while it is being scanned. Measurements are made by smoothly sweeping the FastSCAN Cobra Wand over the object - in a manner similar to spray painting. Just like magic, an image of the object appears on your computer screen and the finished scan is processed to combine overlapping sweeps. Exports to Industry Standard Graphics Applications This three-dimensional data can then be saved in industry-standard formats for loading into a host of popular 3D modelling, graphics and CAD programs.

FastSCAN Cobra works by projecting a fan of laser light on the object while cameras on the Wand view the laser from either side to record the 3D surfaces of the object. Its magic comes from incorporating Polhemus patented FASTRAK® motion tracking technology in the wand itself. The magnetic tracker is used to determine the position and orientation of the Wand, enabling the computer to reconstruct the full three-dimensional surface of the object. You can also scan objects that are prone to movement - head and hands, for example. Just attach a second Tracker Receiver to the object. Since FastSCAN Cobra uses electromagnetic technology to create its magic, you'll find it ideal for scanning non-conducting, opaque objects. For the ultimate in 3D scanning, experience the revolutionary FastSCAN Cobra Handheld 3D Laser Scanner for yourself.

FastRBF Extension

With new FastRBF extensions, FastSCAN now represents a complete rapid prototyping solution in a single package.

The automatic hole-filling and smooth extrapolation of incomplete surface data that the FastRBF extensions provide saves many hours otherwise spent laboriously repairing holes and defects in scans. All this is done without compromising the high detail of the original scan. FastRBF, however, also offers advanced smoothing and noise rejection techniques along with sophisticated mesh simplification that exploits the unique mathematical function that FastRBF uses to model the scan data. Consequently, surfaces simplified with FastRBF are more faithful to the raw scan data than other traditional methods. The FastRBF plug-in also guarantees that a water tight, manifold surface is exported from the scanner - an essential consideration for rapid prototyping and a unique capability in a laser scanner. With the FastRBF extensions, all this capability is now available to the user at the time of acquisition.

FastRBF surface extrapolation and mesh simplification
FastRBF surface extrapolation and mesh simplification

This example demonstrates FastRBF hole filling, surface extrapolation and mesh simplification in order to create a water tight model suitable for manufacture by rapid prototyping. The complete task is solved within the scanner software at the time of acquisition. FastRBF is used to create a smooth water tight surface from the raw laser scan data of the bust scanned above. Holes are automatically filled and the surface smoothly extrapolated to a user-defined bounding box, the very fine mesh derived from the Radial Basis Function (left) was then simplified prior to exporting, while still maintaining the high detail of the original scan (right).

The FastRBF extensions offer key scanning improvements:

  • Automatic hole filling
  • Smooth extrapolation of surfaces
  • Mesh simplification while preserving scan detail
  • The export of guaranteed closed water tight meshes
  • Meshes characterized by more uniform triangles
  • Low pass filtering (smoothing) of scans
  • Error-bar fitting for noisy data - just specify a fitting tolerance

FastScan Scorpion

The Scorpion uses the same technology as the Cobra, casting a fan of laser light over the object, to produce a scan. The Scorpion has two cameras allowing for more detailed scans. While scanning an object the cameras on the wand view the laser from either side to record cross-sectional profiles of the object.
