3D Optical Digitizers
Patterned light is projected onto subjects; deformation is recorded by an off-set camera. Triangulation calculates a 3D mesh. Fast, accurate and adaptable for human portraiture.

3D Laser Scanners
A laser line moves over subjects' surfaces; an off-set camera records deformation. Triangulation calculates a 3D mesh. Slower, but higher accuracy enabled for static objects.

3D Mechanical Digitizers
Mechanical arms physically probe objects, guided by the user; points are recorded on the surface of subjects. Intuitive but slow. Unsuitable for delicate objects.

3D Scanning software
View, edit and export scan data efficiently and accurately. Triangulation, registration and merging algorithms, polygon editing, CAD conversion, model export for web viewing.

Surface Imaging International Ltd - Vectra 3D Scanner (formly MedEIM FCS2)

A high resolution optical scanner aimed at the medical market, this two pod, six camera unit can acquire a full set of data in as little as 1.5milliseconds. The Vectra presently has 180 degree coverage, with a 360 degree solution due in October. It is fully portable and has proven track record in high specification, medical applications.

Surface Imaging Face Imaging System

Surface Imaging's 3D camera system provides very high-performance imaging options, making it easy to image all types of patients rapidly and accurately. Care has been taken in designing the systems to be lightweight, portable, and very easy to use, while ensuring the very high accuracy and fidelity you need in clinical decision making and research.

Digital surface photogrammetry offers a range of very fast and non-intrusive 3D surface imaging techniques, which overcome the potential problems of subject movement. Surface Imaging has developed this technique to provide very high precision data on surface geometry and texture.

The 3D imaging system is extremely fast (approximately 1.5 milliseconds capture time), enhancing patient comfort and non-intrusiveness. This makes it possible to take repeat images as often as necessary, in particular of very young patients, even newborn infants.

The clinician then has a complete 3D data set that is immediately ready to view and analyze. Surface Imaging's 3D analysis software supports multi-disciplinary teams, to aid in early diagnosis, increase the level of understanding of hard and soft tissue relationships, assist in treatment planning and management and monitoring of conditions.

Easily image hard-to-capture subjects; VECTRA makes imaging easy and practical for difficult subjects such as infants, and provides the advantages of 3D for trauma, birth defects and elective procedures.

Versatile patient imaging; VECTRA generates an infinite number of patient views from a single 3D-dataset—fully quantifiable imaging with point-and-shoot simplicity.

Clinical Benefits:

Surface Imaging's 3D technology provides the essential tools for objective assessment, planning and outcomes management :

• interactive three-dimensional visualization: accurate, colour surface shape and texture

• objective quantification of features: accurate measurements can be taken directly from the digital 3D surface, which is of particular benefit for small children and trauma cases

• observation and measurement of essentially three-dimensional features, such as volume

• observation and measurement of features that cannot be done in vivo, e.g., cross-sectional views

• integration with other 2D and 3D digital data sources, including
CT, MRI and X-rays, to combine internal structures and external, aesthetic appearance

• ability to collect frequent high-quality 3D data to monitor change,
without exposing the patient to unnecessary radiation

• "freeze-frame” 3D record of expressions and other ephemeral poses, and quantitative assessment of those poses

• derived numerical information, including measurement of change over time, statistical modeling - computation of average shapes, numerical characterization and classification of features and conditions

• interactive 3D manipulation, and computed simulation of outcomes.

Software:

Our software for 3D visualization, analysis and measurement provides objective analytical components to enhance productivity in consultation, treatment planning, informed consent and clinical outcome quantification.

• Mirror – display your 3D patient data from any viewpoint, for visual assessment

• Electronic Image Management – organise and browse your 3D patient data

• Virtual Patient – communicate and present pre- and post-treatment data with colleagues

• Visualization, Analysis and Measurement – make objective measurements and assessments of soft tissue shape, volume and changes over time

• Cranio-maxillofacial - specialised analysis tools for cranio-maxillofacial practitioners

ThingLab FAQs....
q   What size (Width and height, in pixels) are the photographic texture images produced by the Vectra?
a   2424 x 1527 pixels
q   What is the scanning volume of the system? For example, is it possible to scan the whole body, or just very detailed part of face?
a   There are two Vectra units available; the Standard Vectra and the High Resolution Vectra. The Standard Vectra has two cameras allowing 180 degree capture of a volume equivalent to the head and neck. The High Resolution Vectra has a single camera and scans a smaller area (roughly 1/3 of a head) in greater detail.
q   Do I need two scanners to scan the whole face at once, or can it be done with just one scanner?
a   No just one scanner – it has two cameras built in which allow a 180d egree capture.
q   Is the result better with two scanners (if possible)?
a   Only if you wanted to capture 360 degrees in one acquisition. Surface Imaging are due to release a 360 Vectra in the near future.
q   Does the 3D scanning and texture creation exposure to radiation?
a   No there is not any radiation involved, the scanner projects a white light ‘dither’ pattern onto your face and then takes a number of digital images.
q   Can the 3d scans be exported to .obj format, or some other common format?
a   Yes .obj or .stl can be exported with textures in .png format
q   Your web site states that the Vectra has an approximate capture time of 1.5 millisecond. How long does it take to process this information and transfer the files before the scanner is ready to take a second scan?
a   It takes 2-3mins to process each scan. However you can put this on hold and take a number of scans one after the other (as quickly as it takes the flash to re-charge) and then process them later.
