3D Optical Digitizers
Patterned light is projected onto subjects; deformation is recorded by an off-set camera. Triangulation calculates a 3D mesh. Fast, accurate and adaptable for human portraiture.
3D Laser Scanners
A laser line moves over subjects' surfaces; an off-set camera records deformation. Triangulation calculates a 3D mesh. Slower, but higher accuracy enabled for static objects.
3D Mechanical Digitizers
Mechanical arms physically probe objects, guided by the user; points are recorded on the surface of subjects. Intuitive but slow. Unsuitable for delicate objects.
3D Scanning software
View, edit and export scan data efficiently and accurately. Triangulation, registration and merging algorithms, polygon editing, CAD conversion, model export for web viewing.

ThingLab FAQs....
q   What is a 'scene scanner'?
a   This is a term commonly used for any 3D scanner that is capable of capturing information from a large area of space. Commonly the can scan 360 degrees on the horizontal and 150 degress vertically.
q   How does the DeltaSphere work?
a   A rotating mirror directs a laser in an arc around the scanning head - this then rotates on a motorized base to produce a 360 degree 3D panorama. The depth information is recored using 'time of flight' technology, basically how long each of the laser pulses take to return to the scan head.
q   Is the laser eye safe?
a   The standard laser unit is eye safe, although as with all products that use lasers you should never look directly into the beam. The Infrared unit is not eye safe and anyone in the area should wear protective eye glasses.
q   How do I view the data produced?
a   3rdTech provide a piece of software called SceneVision which allows you take measurements, create basic template geometry, convert the point cloud to triangle, export the file as VRML data.
